# Competitor brand color audit

**07/01/26. By Shamsi Brinn.**

An audit of the primary brand colors used across the research-publishing ecosystem.

In addition to our existing distinctive and protectable logo (a result of a redesign and formal registration in 2021), in this audit we examined primary brand colors across publishers, preprint servers, repositories, discovery tools, and identity services. arXiv spun out as an independent organization in July 2026 and is no longer tied to Cornell's official red color. This audit helped us determine our distinctive and independent arXiv palette going forward.

## Findings

**twelve of the eighteen platforms we analyzed use a dark blue as their primary brand color.** And not merely blue: almost the same blue. Eight of the twelve sit between hue 200 and 210 on the color wheel, a band so narrow that Springer Nature, IEEE,
and Taylor & Francis are separated more by lightness than by color. This particular blue is so ubiquitous in interface design it is often referred to simply as "Tech Blue" or "Corporate Blue."

That uniformity is by choice. It signals stability: institutional, expected, unoriginal. It tells users "we are serious, we are careful, we have been here a long time." arXiv also needs to signal stability... but with a hint of anti-establishment.

**So we took the same hue but went light.** Our primary color, Open Blue, sits at hue 207 — dead
center of that crowded band. But at 82% lightness it is **thirty points lighter than the lightest platform
in the field**, and seventy points lighter than the darkest.

| Organization | Hue | Lightness |
|---|---|---|
| Taylor & Francis, the darkest | 205 | 12% |
| Zenodo, the lightest | 216 | 52% |
| **arXiv Open Blue** | **207** | **82%** |

Our secondary color repeats that balance. Most of the field pairs its corporate blue with black. arXiv pairs Open Blue with Repository Brown — a near-black with 10% saturation, on the orange side of the color wheel. We are warm where others are neutral and light where others are dark. We have encapsulated our brand identity in two colors.

### Color comparison

**Primarily navy / dark blue — 12 of 18 platforms.** Lightness ranges from 12% (Taylor & Francis) to 52% (Zenodo). Extremely crowded.

ORCID's lime green is unique in the landscape. Notably similar to arXiv's Access Lime (![](swatches/c4d82e.png) `#c4d82e`) used for internal tools.

## Decisions

arXiv's Open Blue as primary color finds this balance. By choosing a similar hue to other publishers we signal our place in the ecosystem. But the much brighter value makes it quite distinct and signals openness and transparency. Open Blue embodies arXiv's reputation as "the light side of the internet."

Repository Brown pairs beautifully with blue and is warmer than the black that most publishers favor. Lighter tints will create a distinctive blue-brown palette for arXiv that is both conservative and warm, traditional yet subversively bright.
